Are you new to growing begonias and wondering about these plants’ reputation for being delicate? Most hybrids and some species are easy to grow. Here is some basic advice to help you start growing begonias with confidence.
Begonias like:
- Light, well-drained soil
- Short periods of relatively dry soil between waterings
- Bright but filtered light
- Steady but moderate feeding
- Good air circulation
- Shallow pots
- Humidity of 40 to 80%
- A temperature of 18 to 24°C
Begonias do not like:
- Clay or poorly aerated soil
- Standing in water, or being in completely dried-out soil
- Direct sun
- No fertiliser, or too much fertiliser at once
- Draughts, whether cold or hot
- Pots that are too big
- Humidity below 35%
- Temperatures below 13°C or above 30°C
