Begonia ulmifolia

Willdenow 1805

Venezuela

Section Donaldia

The “elm-leaved” begonia was brought from Venezuela to Germany in 1805.

Appearance

This species is shrub-like (50 to 75 cm). The upright stems are branched and knotty. The oval, pointed leaves are a lovely bright green, paler beneath, slightly downy, with prominent veins. The petiole is short and the stipules fairly thick and semi-persistent. The inflorescence is an umbel of small white flowers that appear in spring. The buds are greenish-white. The ovary is elongated and greenish, with one larger wing marbled with green lines.

Culture

It is fairly easy to grow, but should be pinched out regularly, especially when young. This species needs a bright, light position without direct sun, and a steady temperature of 18 to 22°C all year round.

Propagation

Propagate in spring from leafy stem cuttings or from seed.
