Begonia U074

Discovered in the Philippines in 1983, this small begonia has not yet been officially named. Distributed as “Begonia unidentified no. 074”, a designation given by the American Begonia Society, it was for a time sold by the former Domaine de la Bellongue under the name “Porcelaine”.

Appearance

A spreading, trailing begonia, it produces fine runners reminiscent of the stolons of a saxifrage or a small strawberry plant! It is a small species, no more than 10 cm tall. The entire leaves are bronze-green on top, with very many irregular silver spots. The underside is raspberry red. The stems and petioles are reddish. The whole plant is covered with fine, silky hairs. Porcelain-pink flowers appear above the foliage all year round.

Culture

This is a delicate species best kept for the greenhouse or terrarium, as it needs high humidity and warmth all year round, with medium light and no direct sun. This begonia does very well under artificial light. However, it dislikes overwatering. Repot into a small container with a rich, well-drained substrate.

Propagation

This species can be propagated from seed and from leafy stem cuttings all year round.
