Very little is known about this magnificent hybrid. It is said to have been raised by the American hybridiser Johnson in the 1980s.
Its habit recalls that of Begonia diadema from New Guinea, or of Begonia deliciosa, with similarly fragile stems, although it is less tall and more bushy. The leaf blade, particularly its colour, is very reminiscent of a form of Begonia palmata (China and India), although the latter is less deeply cut. So the mystery remains as to which species were used to create this hybrid.
Appearance
A plant with upright, little-branched stems, 60 cm tall. The deeply cut blade is green on top, with a broad silvery-white zone following the finely toothed edge and revealing the green veins. The underside is reddish, with pale patches between the veins.
Culture
A delicate plant to grow, as it is sensitive to cold and powdery mildew, so it is hard to keep through the winter. It needs high humidity in summer. It is also rather prone to mealybugs.
Propagation
Stem cuttings are recommended in summer. Leaf cuttings also work, however, and give a fuller plant.
