Begonia ‘Bettina Rothschild’

Sold as B. x ‘Fire Flush’ in English-speaking countries, this superb hybrid was created in France in 1886 by Rougier. It is one of the first cultivars of Begonia rex. More than a century old, it is still very popular with collectors and the general public. But beware: it is often tricky to grow.

Appearance

The olive-green leaves are entire and broad, covered with a dense down of bright red hairs. The new rhizome shoots and young leaves look like shiny red velvet. The white, scented flowers appear in spring. The flower buds are also covered with sparser hairs.

Culture

This begonia is particularly temperamental. It can thrive without any problem or decline just as quickly, in conditions that are sometimes completely opposite. Try growing it several times in different places. It does, however, need moderate watering. Repot into a rich, humus-rich, well-drained substrate, using a wide but shallow container.

Propagation

This hybrid is propagated from rhizome sections and leaf cuttings in spring and summer.
