Begonia amphioxus

Sands 1990
Malaysia (Sabah)
Section Petermannia

This plant, rare in collections and native to the Malaysian part of Borneo, is a real little gem. It was introduced into cultivation in 1984 by Martin Sands, a botanist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in England.

Appearance

It is a glabrous, shrub-like plant whose stems can reach 75 cm in height. The blade is peltate, with the characteristic very elongated, pointed angel-wing shape. It is green on top with burgundy dots and a margin line of the same colour. The white flowers appear in summer.

Culture

This plant grows in a very small area on limestone hills in the Borneo forest. It is tricky to grow and should be kept in a terrarium.

Propagation

Stem or leaf cuttings are easy.
