Begonia ‘Argenteo-Guttata’

This hybrid was created in 1888 by the famous Lorraine nurseryman Victor Lemoine by crossing Begonia albo-picta and Begonia olbia.

Appearance

A shrub-like begonia 50 to 80 cm tall. The stems are slender, upright, knotty and woody at the base, with short internodes. The medium-sized leaves (13 to 18 cm) are obovate, irregular and toothed, a lovely bronze-green with reddish tints in summer, and speckled with countless silver dots. The petiole is short and slightly red. The inflorescence is many-flowered and drooping. The white flowers appear in late winter and spring. The ovary has three equal wings.

Culture

This begonia likes warmth: do not let the temperature drop below 15°C in winter. Sudden changes in temperature make it shed its leaves, and it dislikes cold, damp conditions. It is also very prone to powdery mildew.

Propagation

Propagation is by leafy stem cuttings in spring and summer.
