Begonia hispida var. cucullifera

Irmscher 1953
Brazil
Section Pritzelia

Native to Brazil, this rather unusual-looking begonia is hard to keep in cultivation. Grow it in a well-heated greenhouse or conservatory.

Appearance

The plant has a narrow, bushy habit. The large, bright green leaves are covered with whitish hairs. They develop outgrowths that look like miniature leaves on the upper side of the blade. This begonia flowers moderately in autumn.

Culture

This begonia likes to find the conditions of its distant homeland: warmth and humid air. Humidity that is too low makes the leaf edges dry out. Repot into a rich, porous, humus-rich substrate, and avoid watering with cold, very limy water.

Propagation

Stem cuttings and seed give very good results. However, there is no point in rooting the outgrowths on the leaves: they are not young plantlets, and they very rarely root.
